Poetic Remarks In The Human World [traditional Chinese-English]
Ching-I Tu's translation of Poetic Remarks in the Human World contains 111 notes and a comparison of Chinese and English names. The translation was reviewed by famous sinologists. As far as the English translation of "People's Words" is concerned, the version of Tu Jingyu is the earliest published English translation. The translation of Tu Jingyi was translated into the main contents of the 64th issue of the Journal of the State of the Chinese Culture. The 64 articles were selected and published by Wang Guowei himself, including Wang Guowei's main poetic concept and evaluation of poets and poetry. Dr. Wang Shijie, then president of the Taiwan Academia Sinica, and Professor Liu Ruoyu, a Chinese poetry scholar with a good reputation in the United States, gave high praise.
About the Author
Tu Jingyu (1935—) is a senior professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers University. He was the head of the department and director of the Asian Studies Department. He has served as a visiting professor and guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii, Taiwan University, and National Jinan International University. His main research interests are Chinese thought, ancient literature and literary criticism. Recent works include the compilation of Classics and Interpretation: The Hermeneutic Traditions in Traditional China (Transaction, 1996) and Interpretation and Intellectual Change: Chinese Hermeneutics in Historical Perspective (Transaction, 2005).
Wang Guowei (1877—1927), a native of Haining, Zhejiang, was a famous scholar in the period of Chinese modern times. Wang Guowei accepted the influence of Western philosophy and aesthetic thoughts, and analyzed Chinese classical literature with Western philosophy, aesthetics and literary viewpoints. The "Human Words" is a representative work. "Human Words" was written in 1908~1909. It is the most prestigious literary criticism work in modern China. The whole book takes "artistic conception" as the core and regards it as the principle and criticism standard of word creation. In theory, it has reached a very high level and has far-reaching effects. Since the advent of "Human Words" in the early 20th century, there are only two existing translations. The authors are Taiwanese scholar Tu Jingyu and American scholar Li You'an, which represent different characteristics of translators who have different backgrounds in their native language. The reference will enable Chinese and foreign readers to grasp the essence of Wang Guowei's "Human Words" ideology, and the earlier translation of Taiwanese scholar Tu Jingyu.
This book is a popular reading material for culture. The book is a combination of traditional Chinese characters and English. It is suitable for students and scholars interested in Chinese culture as a model for research. It is also applicable to embassy staff and cultural promotion commissioners to teach Chinese culture.
