This book encompasses the following characteristics: I. With an eye to the difficulty that foreigners have in learning Chinese, we begin with principles easily learned and graduate to more difficult ones, explaining the principles and contents within the book systematically by circulatory and repetitive teaching methods.
Based on years of teaching experience, we divide the initials and finals into several parts and explain them systematically in the order of difficulty and acquisition foreigners have had in learning them. Moreover, we integrate pinyin, pictures, and English notes together in the explanations, exercises and pronounciation of Chinese syllables, which helps the learners understand not only pinyin, but also Chinese characters and vocabulary, so as to lay a solid foundation for future study.
III. This book gives primacy to practice through exercises and to explain utilizing the common language and experiences of everyday life. We try using commonly spoken language and simple, lucid pictures to assist learners in understanding the concepts and principles described in this textbook. For instance, we do not label the phonetic values in explaining the four tones because we have found that the phonetic values do not play an important part in teaching and learning. Therfore, we adopt staves to label the relative positions of the four tones, which, at a glance, present a clear picture of pronounciation. There are various types of skill practices, such as reading, listening, talking and writing, which assist the learners in grasping knowledge of the basic concepts.
The Interesting Chinese Pinyin Textbook can be used either as an introductory pinyin textbook for foreign learners beginning to learn Chinese, or as a pinyin textbook for those desiring to correct and improve their Chinese pronounciation, or as a reference book for Chinese children learning pinyin.
