Easy Steps to Chinese for Kids is a series of Chinese textbooks specifically designed for kids from non-Chinese backgrounds. It covers four levels, each of which is made up of two volumes: a and b. This series has four characters in it, namely Ding Yi, Tian Li, Jingjing and Lele, who are primary school students from China and abroad. Beautifully designed illustrations, simple sentences and dialogues and lovely songs among other means are adopted to develop the kids’ interest in learning Chinese and help them lay a solid Chinese foundation by mastering such fundamental Chinese knowledge as numbers, basic strokes, self-introduction and daily expressions. Chinese culture is introduced on the last two pages of each volume together with some color stickers for practice.

This is Textbook 3b in the series, which is beautifully illustrated and printed in full color. It has altogether 7 lessons encompassing such topics as stationery, school facilities, positions, hobbies, food & drink, and nature. In this volume, we’ll go on with the learning of initials and compound finals of Chinese syllables. Each lesson teaches two single characters and provides more exercises on character writing, sentence making and simple composition as well as specialized listening exercises to further improve students’ integrated language skills.

This is Volume 3b (Workbook) in the series, it can be used in the second semester of Year 3 at primary school.

This is Textbook 4a in the series, which is beautifully illustrated and printed in full color. It has altogether 7 lessons encompassing such topics as telephone number, languages, daily routine, means of transport, etc. This volume attaches more importance to the review of the pinyin learned previously, teaches three radicals in each lesson besides reviewing the simple characters learned before, provides more exercises on character and radical writing, sentence making and textual expression, and devotes an independent section to listening. Through these efforts, it helps improve students’ integrated language skills.

To be used together with Easy Steps to Chinese for Kids (Textbook 4a).

This is Workbook 4b in the series, which has beautiful illustrations and abundant exercises and is printed in full color. It has altogether 7 lessons encompassing such topics as weather, clothes, actions/behaviors in progress, school facilities, school subjects and sports, etc. Supporting Textbook 4b, this book makes an overall review of pinyin and provides exercises on both the new radicals and the radicals learned in 4a. With a good variety of exercises, such as matching, sentence making, translation, drawing and paragraph writing, it enables students to achieve a solid grasp of the contents taught in the textbook and to put them into practice as well.
